Paint Project!

So in October, before we moved to a new place, a friend was giving away stuff during her move and I got this piece! We have a little TV for our basement and no stand for it since our last 2 place's happened to have a pre-built-in spot for it. I had been wanting to try a new project for a while now and this free item was the perfect thing to try it on before I move on to other furniture.

The first thing I did was take a degreaser to the whole thing to remove any dirt and build up.

Then I painted it with my favorite go to paint, BEHR. I used Pale Wheat in Satin. The coolest part was I got to use my sisters paint gun and it made painting it go by a lot faster! I now have decided that I need my own smaller version.

Next, using BEHR finishing glaze and mixing it with some dark walnut stain. I brushed the glaze over each section, like so.

Take an old cotton t-shirt and immediately wipe away. Leave dark in the cracks and giving the whole project a worn antique look.

FINISHED! Except that the glass broke 10min before I went to put it in. So now I guess I have to replace that, most likely I will frost the glass too! Maybe a future pictures is on its way.

This post is a year late! I threw this party when my 2 year old turned 1. A year later I would have done a lot better taking pictures of the different things I did, but oh well, you learn something everytime! I think I'll do this party again someday when she is older, becuase after all, her name is Reese!

The cake (this was made with a cookie pan) Was Peanut Butter Pound cake with chocolate frosting and Chocolate fondant.

The craft: We made our own Giant Peanut Butter cups. Using coffee liners we poured chocolatein the bottom, then placed (already prepared) flattened P.B rounds in the middle and topped off with more chocolate. Then refridgerated to take home

I know 1 year olds arn't "supposed" to have peanut butter, but with a name like reese she couldn't be allergic! And I'm not a paranoid mommy.

The game. I had everyone right down as many Reese's Peanut Butter product they could think of (including holiday shapes) in 1 min. (I can't remember now but I believe I had found 43 different kinds) and the winner got that huge candy bar pictured below.

Teapot Cake

This teapot is actually hollow like a real teapot. Made out of chocolate then covered in fondant, the lid comes off to fill with candy! The base (table) is the actual cake! It was a fun challenge to take on!

So last Christmas Santa brought me the best gift ever.

Then this week for my birthday by husband got me the part that will change my life.

I've had this dream to get into photography for a little while. Its an expensive investment, so slow and steady. Now I'm saving for classes and a nice lens.

Now, I've learned about my camera, taught myself about Exposure, Aperture, ISO, yada yada, but you still need time and experience. But I was an idot and offered to take my cousins engagement pictures to help on cost. Little did I know that she would take me up on it and I found myself taking their pictures a week later. Luckily we now live close to a cousin who gave me a crash course in Photoshop the day before! I actually am very pleased with the results and have no probably telling everyone that I am proud of myself!

Better than 'Better than Sex Cake'

I know everyone has a "Better Than Sex Cake" recipe, but I need to share with you my perfected version. This one gets everyone to say "MMMMMmmm THATS good.

What you'll need: 1 Devils Food Cake mix, 1 large Cool Whip, 1 jar caramel (I prefer smuckers), 1 can sweet and condensed milk, and 5-6 skor bars/ heath bars chopped.

Bake you cake in a 9x13 pan. Once its cooled you cube it into 1 inch sections. Place half on the bottom of your trifle dish. Then pour half the can of sweet and condensed milk across the top, THEN half the caramel. Yes BOTH my friends, I know some of you out there use one or the other, I'm telling you right now, USE BOTH! then sprinkle with skor pieces, then cool whip.

Repeat this step all over again. But make this like 8 hours ahead of time and let it sit in the refrigerator so it can SOAK all the goodness up!

Sour Cream Lemon Pie

This is my go to dessert for Easter. If you like Cyrus O'leary's Sour Cream lemon then this is the closet copy cat I have. If you have never tried it, THEN DO! Seriously it is amazing. Or take my word for it and make this one! There is something about lemon that just yells SPRING IS HERE!

Sour Cream Lemon Pie

Over medium heat

1 C Sugar
3 1/2 T Corn Starch
1 T Lemon Rind
1/2 C lemon Juice
3 Egg yolks slightly beaten
1 C. Milk.

Stir over medium heat until it thickens up. Then take off heat and ADD

1/4 C butter

Let it cool down, I never have patience to let it cool all the way, and ADD

1 C Sour Cream

Take
1 pie crust,(be my guest to use Marie Calendars frozen crust! I usually do!) pricked and baked.

Pour into crust and refrigerate! Its great with some Whipping Cream or even just a cold glass of milk.

Easter Cake Pops

Last year I made brownie bites just like this but with the cake ball craze all the rage, I went that direction.
Tips:
You make the ears by piping with a #2 tip onto wax paper then add a toothpick to the back. once dry you flip over and put the pick on. Then stick into the cake pop..

So I posted this last year, but didn't included the recipe. Next year Im going to combine a few different recipes I found, because all though these look more like nests then some of the others out there, I feel like the flavor can be improved upon. I found a great one that uses marshmallows and butter! So stayed tuned next year!

16 - 20 oz chocolate (i used bakers semi sweet)

1 C. Peanut Butter Microwave together for 1 min. then 30 sec.repeated til melted.

About 1 box of All Bran and 1 Bag ChowMein. (I saw about because mine wasn't goopy enough this time and I used the full amounts)

Form into nests on wax paper. Put in your choice of eggs (cadbury mini's for me please) Then place in the fridge!

Glee Cake

So one of the 12 year old girls I teach in Church invited me to her birthday party! How could I turn her down right? And for her present, what else, a cake of course. I called her mom to see if I could make it and asked if the party had a theme, Glee. What is a 12 year old is doing watching Glee, don't ask me, I just make the cakes! I wanted to keep it one layer and simple, but wasn't sure what to do so I googled it and stole a couple ideas to combine together.

Daisy Wedding Cake

This cake not only looks good, its taste good. I finally found a winner for white cake! LET ME TELL YOU, IT TASTE AMAZING. And rightfully so, it has a colossal amount of butter. I make all my pound cakes from scratch. Recipe below (for this cake, 10 inch x 6 inch rounds, I double the recipe)!

Cream Cheese Pound Cake

3 cups granulated sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) margarine

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
8 ounces cream cheese
6 jumbo eggs, beaten
Pinch of salt

Begin with softened cream cheese, margarine and butter. Cream the cream cheese, margarine, butter, sugar and add beaten eggs and flour alternately. Mix very well. Pour into greased and floured tube pan. Bake in cold oven at 300 degrees F for 1 hour and 15 minutes or when cake pulls away from sides of pan. Frost when completely cooled or leave plain.

Chocolate Lace Dome

This is great for making desserts fancy shmancy! Like ice cream, MY favorite, Molten Lava Cakes OR, BOTH!

What You'll Need:

Melting chocolate

Water Balloon

Piping tip (#2) and bag (or you could try it by cutting a small hole in a bag.)

First: Blow up your balloon Second: Melt your chocolate *I use almond bark or candy melts because they melt smooth and harden fast. And pour it into piping bag with tipThen pipe it onto the balloon, no rhyme or reason. I tried to do a specific pattern thinking that would be oh so beautiful..... but unless you have the most amazing skills with chocolate and a steady hand it end up looking worse than just random madness! Let harden in fridge.Pop the balloon. Pull it ut before it completely shrivel up or it could stick to the inside making it hard to pull out without breaking pieces. Then you are ready to serve! over a beautiful dessert.

Leprechaun Hat Cake Balls

So I made these last year with the brownie mold, but this time I thought I could make them better with cake balls.

What you need:
Cake balls (one cake mix baked, crumbled, and mixed with a tube or home made cream cheese frosting)
Melted chocolate for candy dipping
Fondant (or green licorice)
Mini M&Ms
Fudge Striped cookies

I rolled my cake balls into the size and shape of large marshmallows. Then stuck them in the freezer while I prepared everything else.

I cut strips of green fondant. I didn't measure exactly I just did what I thought looked good on the hat. I guess about 5 inch x 3/8 inch.Melted my chocolate
Got out my M&Ms, cookies.
I found the best way to dip is to have the name brand with the holes. That way I can dip the cake ball on a stick, lightly tap off excess chocolate then bring the cookie up around the stick and pull the stick out. It keep the process easy and a lot less messy.
Then you can wrap the fondant around (when the chocolate is still wet or after its cooled, doesn't matter)
Last, use a toothpick to dab some chocolate on the M&M and stick it on!

Olive Garden Lemon Cream Cake!

If you haven't had the Lemon Cream Cake at olive garden then you are missing out, that, along with their signature Pumpkin Pie in the Fall are two of my favorite things! I have copy cats for both. This one is a winner and SOOOOOO easy!

What you NEED:

One 2 layer white cake (I just use a Betty Crocker Box, you'll want it light and fluffy)
8 oz cream cheese
2 C powdered sugar
4 tsp lemon juice 1 C. heavy whipping cream
½ C flour
½ C powdered sugar
¼ C cold butter
½ tsp vanilla

Frosting:
Mix cream cheese and powdered sugar till smooth, mix in lemon juice. Whip cream until stiff peaks form. Combine with cream cheese mixture, stir until blended. Frost middle, top and sides of cake

Crumb Topping:
Combine flour and powdered sugar, add butter and dribble in the vanilla. Cut in butter with Pie cutter or 2 knives. Do not press together. Should be crumbly no bigger than a pea. Sprinkle over the top and press into sides. Chill for 3 hours.

Now, I like a THICK middle layer of frosting just like the olive garden so my trick is to spread it an inch thick, place the top layer of the cake on top, wrap it in WAX paper and stick it in the freezer for 30 min - 1 hour, THEN finish frosting the rest (olive garden doesn't frost the top but I like too) and sprinkle crumb topping over.
The cake I pictured here is actually just a 6 inch cake.

So after making the footballs, I graduated on to the Cupcake Pops, I found these on Bakerella and thought they were so cute. C "helped" the whole time and it was fun to do together. HERE are the step by step instructions. I only had the large Wilton cookie cutter and they still turned out cute.

So usually we like to have big superbowl gathering with friends, but after moving this year we have done a lot less of that, so we are keeping it low key, like 4 people.... But this is still me, and I have to do a couple cute things. On the menu:

Large hogi sandwhiches with the works

Buffalo wing dip (instead of our usaul Hot fried wings)

MIX: 8 oz cream cheese (softened), 1/2 cup Blue cheese dressing, 1/2 cup Hot sause, 1/2 cup shredded mozarella, ADD: 1 lb shredded chicken, BAKE 350 for 20 min. Top with crumbled blue cheese.

The BEST Cheeseball (recipe below)These 4 ingredients(Cube of Marg, can chopped olives,1 Kraft Roka Blue spread, 8 oz cream cheese), room temp, mix together, refridgerate, roll in a ball, roll into nuts (Pecans or Walnuts). Serve with Wheat Thins (at least thats our way)

Groundhog cupcake brownies

This is a great one to do with kids! I piped everything on and she placed it!

What you'll need
Cupcake or Brownie mix
Frosting
Coconut
Mounds, Almond Joy's, or Bounty Bar
food coloring
Mini M&M's
Brown Sprinkles

Cupcakes:
I just used a box of Brownie mix since my husband doesn't like cake. I also put chopped almonds and coconut in the bottom of each liner than poured the mix on top.
I just used a tub of cream cheese frosting to save time, died it green and added coconut to it.
Then sprinkled more 'green' coconut on the top for grass.

Goundhogs:
I stiffen my tub of frosting with more powdered sugar so its not too runny and will harden up.
I use the frosting as glue and pipe it on.
Eyes are frosting with a tiny brown sprinkle in the center
Nose is a red M&M cut in half
Cheeks, brown M&Ms
Ears, brown M&Ms cut in half.
Tooth, frosting

Groundhog Pancakes!

This groundhog pancakes are really simple and so cute!

What you need:
Pancake batter
Donut holes
butterscotch or peanut butter chips
Marshmallows
mini m&m's
Frosting, any kind
For the head, use frosting as glue.
One mini marshmallow cut in half and squished with brown m&m's, for eyes
Chips for ears,
Red m&m for nose!
Make large pancakes and two smaller pancakes to "lift the mound" (under the large pancake)
You can dye you pancakes green like grass too.
Cut a whole in the middle of your large pancake and stick you groundhog head in!

My New Project

So back in October I found this baby sitting at goodwill.
Do you see that price tag?
That's right $50 buck. A solid wood table WITH 4 chairs. Now Shawn wasn't so excited about dragging this baby home (he has little faith in me), claiming that we had sold our last table because we were OUTGROWING IT, and this one is just only slightly bigger (it does have a leaf). And he doubted that I would end up doing anything with it.
Our first table was $175 Walmart fakey, and NOTHING like this cute baby! Doesn't it have personality! LOVE IT! A wood chair alone can cost $50, so he eventually gave in and let me keep her!
So the day I went out to sand the top down it rained and then snowed...and then Christmas time came, so now it's January and I ready to pretty her up.

Now I've been debating what I want to do with her. I LOVE the cream color and all but I'm not really a light furniture person. I REALLY wanted to do distressed white with RED chairs.
My sister thinks it need to be like blue or green. Which teal blue and brown are the colors I want to do in my kitchen. But my husband says NO! He doesn't like funky things so much. And since I haven't even begun to decorate a home since we are always moving and renting, I think I'll have to stay more conventional! Oh well! Maybe if I do a great job on this one I'll find another one and get to have more fun!

I wanted to make a huge tutu! This consists of 12 yards of tulle! Crazy, yes, but adorable! They aren't practical for anything but photo shoots and weddings, I can't imagine a girl just running around the house in one all day!

If you have ever gone to buy a cute little cupcake at the store and gufawed at the price of a simple cupcake then I challange you to make cupcakes for an event. I made 200 brains for a ward party and then a week later frosted another 200 for a wedding! Very time consuming and tedious, but people go crazy for them right now. Try to appreciate the work that goes into that tiny little thing before you gobble it up complaining about the price!

Halloween this year

This year we went for the Aladdin Theme! I borrowed Aladdin's costume, I made the hat and vest for Abu, and made the Jasmine outfit and Carpet! It was fun and after Halloween there was a Radio contest for tickets to Disney on Ice. You sent in a photo of your kids dressed as disney Characters so I sent in our family pic and WE WON!!!!

I asked to make a cake for a friends, daughters, Sweet 16 party. It was a princess theme, and I have tons of fun designing this cake! It really came to life once all the jewels were on. There were a few mishaps including the bottom cake attempting to slide off its stand... I DON'T THINK SO. I went to 3 Michael's to get Duff's new silver graffiti spray....all gone within a day. Who in Hades ran around and bought up all the silver (no other color was out) in idaho just to spite me. Needless to say it was my first time using the silver cake powder/ paint which was.... interesting.

I made these cupcakes (brownie really) for my friends party. She gave me the recipe and they were DELICIOUS!!!

1 box dark choc brownie mix

2 eggs

1/3 cup oil

1/2 cup water

1 cup shredded coconut

1 cup chopped almonds

2 cups heavy whipping cream

1/3 cup powdered sugar

4 TB Bird’s custard powder (I used cook and serve custard jello mix)

2 TB butter

4 TB semi sweet choc chips

Combine brownie mix, eggs, oil, and water. Stir until moistened. In a separate bowl, combine coconut and chopped almonds.

Spoon nut mixture evenly throughout paper liners. Fill paper liners with brownie batter ¾ full. Bake at 350 for 13-15 min, until soft in the center. Remove and cool comp on wire rack.

Meanwhile, whip the cream until firm peaks form. Add custard powder and powdered sugar and combine well. Frost cooled cupcakes with the custard, be generous!

Melt butter and choc in a small bowl in the microwave. Be careful not to burn the choc. Stir every 20 sec. Drizzle cooled choc over the custard cream topping

Facelift

My parents have this little sudio apartment in their backyard that has seen many people in and out through the years. We are temporarily living here for the summer in between moving and decided that it was time for a little change. The RADICAL/NASTY/MATTED green carpeting was ripped up and I got my paint skills out once more.
To my sisters, do you even recognize it anymore? I thought I would feel some sadness when the beautiful green was gone (yeah right)!

Also, the balloons were supposed to have leaves so they would look like strawberries, but they didn't turn out like I wanted and I didn't have time to change it!

I had never had a Monte Cristo sandwich till we moved to our current town. Chedder's Restaurant serves a GREAT ONE! So I decided to make my own!

Ingredients:
Bread (I used French bread sliced thin)
Swiss Cheese
Sliced Ham

This makes up the Sandwich, then you dunk it in the batter:
1 C milk
2 T Flour
2 eggs

Fry the sandwich in vegetable oil till crisp, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and serve with raspberry jam!

Princess Cake!

I got the chance to make another cake for birthday party! I LOVE getting the practice because it really easy to forget when you aren't constantly making cakes. Its rare for me to whip up some frosting just to practice making flowers on my own time. Im totally rusty but hopefully I can find ways to brush up and get better at my cakes! When I saw the picture in the wilton book, they make it look so much easier than it is...I think they cheat and use royal icing!

This time I made Bottle cookies for favors (next time I won't be so lazy and I'll outline in white with oz. lines and make the nipple its own color because they just looked like glue bottles to me). Like many other families, we build traps the day before St Patricks day to trap our leprechaun. Of course he seems to always get away and his gold turns to chocolate.... so we haven't hit the jackpot yet. We even bribed our little man with mini Irish Drink. This is build out of a outmeal box. This lid is almost cut completely away so that when he goes for the drinks he falls through the center!

Here are a couple treats I made for St Patricks day parties.

The pretzels are dipped in white chocolate first then the other two crossed over each other.

The cute hat idea I got from my sister at her blog. But instead of marshmellows I made brownie bites. They taste better that way, but they look cuter with marshmellows.

A friend makes these for all our baby showers, and I just love it! Its one of those DUH things (I guess I might just be behind since I don't shop etsy). My sister is about to have her fifth and last but its never too late right. I had to pick gender neutral colors and patterns because they are waiting to find out! Most people have short straps with velcro, but I just love the bow, so cute and keeps it from sliding around. Can't wait to see my new niece or nephew!

You can make your bread from scratch if you like but I have never made french bread before so, I took the easy route!
I bought two Pillsbury refrigerated french loaf tubes. Turn into a heart and then simply follow their directions!

So I wanted to do something with C that she could make but, she is still only 2 1/2 so it couldn't be TOO complicated. Mom still has to do most the work. However, she mixed, and poured and put the sticks in! I opted for the chocolate melting this year! I think she ate about 1/2 a lb of chocolate when all was said and done.But of course, there is always that person who can just take it one step higher! Next year we can redo the chocolate pops but with THIS flare! So cute, thanks for the idea Julie!

Silk pins
Heart Shape

Cute out about 100 3 in circles, (I think mine were closer to 4 I just used a mug)
Then you pin each one on after folding in half and then half again.I also like to make a few small rose bud looking ones to place around it too.Then you just pin them around... no strategy

I got this vinyl lettering free in the mail from Say Anything Expressions. This is the same place I ordered my little girls wall lettering. So in order to put it too good use I took a trip to my favorite Hobby Lobby store, coupon in hand, and bought the glass for $4, and the ribbon at the dollar spot!
I was thinking about filling it with conversation hearts or something...What do you think?

Scripture Tote

I had a friend who found instructions to make these scripture totes out of placemates here. They are so easy and you can dress them up anyway you like. I made some for my 8 year old nieces for there new scripture sets ( so sister's, don't spill the surprise or make your own).

Trace out the letter onto your paper than use mod podge to cover the letter.and decorate!

I love throwing Parties, and Halloween has been my favorite! Ever since we moved to TX I havn't had one. My reason, first year we didn't know anyone, and this year, I was having a baby anyday and I am in charge of the ward parties, including Halloween. My First Cake Order

A friend asked me to make a cake for her husband’s birthday! It was the first time I had been hired out for a cake job. I was nervous when she asked because the only cakes I had decorated in the last years have been Callie's first and second birthdays. It ended up being tons of fun and I really enjoyed getting more practice in. She asked for one like I had made in my cake classes, but I wanted it to be better than that, I think it turned out great and was way cute!

I finally put up the vinyl lettering on C's wall, I had been waiting to find a big cheap chunky picture frame but hadn't found it yet. Then my friend had pictures right on canvas, which I know is expensive to print, but she had mod podged it. Duh, Im a total mod podger. I don't know why I hadn't thought of it. I got it all up. Bought the canvas, $4 printed the pic at Sams Club, glued it on, sanded the sides for effect, then glazed over the top in two coats, took about 1 hour and turned out cute!

C is the inspiration for the quote. Before she turned 2 I caught her swaying in front of the mirror in a dress gazing at herself, and then she said it "a dweam come twu" It clicked later that she was copying Cinderella when the mice make her dress. So cute, so I had to have it for her room!

I found this table set a while back on craigslist and had to have it. The paint job was really poorly done and needed some love and care. I decided that I needed to finish it before this baby came (trying to force myself to do what some of you women have called "nesting"). So I finally sat down and sanded off all the white paint to paint again. Of course I forgot to put up abefore picture, I’m not very good at this craft blogging, but I managed to get a picture of one chair before sanded and after sanded! I was finally persuaded to do a different color by mother and husband after they said why go through all that work just to paint it white again!

Here are the favors I did for a friends shower. Fill those little tins with brown and blue M&M's (
